Windsurfing At Caye Caulker
Caye Caulker is an excellent little-known spot for windsurfing. Wetsuits aren't usually needed unless you spend several hours offshore. The air temperature is often in the 75 to 85 degree range year round. The warm clear water is protected by the Belize Barrier Reef, about a mile offshore. The water in between provides great bump and jump conditions, with runs of five miles on each tack.

On a submerged section of the reef to the north, head high waves, are common in the winter. They call this area the Swash. Typical winds are side-on or onshore. Runs here are about a mile long. This is often the safest way to go outside of the reef and into the deep blue for big waves and swells.
There is a protected area just behind the reef with good winds and flat-water speeding. This un-crowded spot gives you flat, straight stretches of water a couple of miles long. Most of this area is quite shallow, chest deep.

There are several other islands that are within sight of Caye Caulker. It is
possible to sail to them, however, the locals never do this alone. At least
three sailors is best, with at least one sailor who knows the coral reef well.
Please use caution, as it's not uncommon to get separated during these crossings
and boat rescue is unreliable when you are sailing out on the frontier.
Small Craft Warning is THE windsurfing shop on the island.
Sometimes winter months offer twenty days of 6.0 or better. The wind has
been recorded as blowing 4.5 to 6.8 at least 50% of the time, from October to
April. May and June are often calm months. July and August lead into the
hurricane season, which lasts until Nov... During hurricane season it can
sometimes be
too windy to sail.
Come on down and windsurf with us! It's an experience you will never
